  • Stephen R. Coffey

    Shareholder

Steve is the founding partner and chair of the Personal Injury and Criminal Defense practices at O’Connell and Aronowitz. Under his leadership, our firm has become one of the most active personal injury and criminal defense law firms in upstate New York. Few lawyers in the area have excelled in both the personal injury and criminal defense fields. With over thirty five years of experience at the state and federal levels, Steve is considered one of the most successful trial lawyers in these two diverse practice areas. As one of the Capital District’s premiere criminal defense trial lawyers, he has been recognized by his peers for his record setting verdicts and settlements. Steve has justly earned that reputation through his representation of thousands of clients in both street crime cases and highly complex white collar cases. In 1975, Steve became fully committed to champion the cause of those unjustly accused after seeing the unfettered power of the government relentlessly pursue innocent people. His desire to reject the abuse of government has led him to represent the most honest and sincere people, who have remained his friends long after their acquittal. Former jurors have even called Steve over the years to represent them and their loved ones. Known for his fearless approach when confronted with injustice, Steve has enjoyed powerful courtroom victories and has consistently garnered million dollar verdicts for his clients in cases that are often highly complex and high profile. Most recently, Steve obtained a $43 million dollar verdict for a brain-injured woman whose case had been turned down by several attorneys. His second largest brain injury verdict came after representing a child in a highly complex product liability case against a corporate giant. The verdict exceeded $20 million dollars. Steve has obtained verdicts in excess of $1M in ten cases and has obtained countless settlements that have exceeded $1M dollars. Steve’s knowledge, insight and analytical skill have translated easily from the courtroom to the media. Local television and radio stations have looked to him as a regular commentator for highly publicized local and national criminal cases. A former Assistant District Attorney for Albany County and Chief Felony Prosecutor, Steve was the youngest Felony Bureau Chief to serve in Albany County. He also served as Special Prosecutor in Fulton and Albany Counties. Steve has complimented his civil and criminal trial skill with an extensive appellate practice. He has lectured and written extensively on civil and criminal trial practice. Steve is also an active participant of local and national charitable organizations involving disabled individuals, including the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Living Resources and The Miracle League.

Her accomplishments tackling the legal issues that arise during litigation have been critical to the firm’s overall success. Pam consistently obtains excellent results representing plaintiffs in all areas of personal injury lawsuits including wrongful death cases, medical malpractice, auto collisions, trucking crashes, dangerous products, abused children and defective medical devices and pharmaceuticals. Since NYS’s passage of the Child Victims Act in 2019, she has focused on representing countless numbers of survivors of child sexual abuse in actions against their abusers and against the establishments that failed to prevent the abuse. Her results speak for themselves. Pam recently settled an automobile collision involving a pedestrian for $1.25 million. She was the driving force in winning an $11 million verdict in a medical malpractice case involving sexually abused children. Pam obtained a $1.8 million settlement in a medical malpractice case involving a physically abused and neglected child. She co-counseled a wrongful death trucking collision which settled for $6.5 million dollars and a ski injury trial which ultimately settled for $1.5 million dollars. Pam also reached a settlement of $750,000 for the wrongful death of a three-year-old child. Pam has obtained millions of dollars on behalf of children injured at birth and on behalf of adults and children who have suffered injury and death as a result of malpractice. She has represented many families in wrongful death actions to recover for the loss of a family member due to the negligent acts of others. Pam understands that the focus must be on family after a parent or child sustains an injury and she fiercely protects families’ legal and financial rights so they can focus on their emotional and physical needs. She is a tireless advocate for a change to New York State’s wrongful death law to include a recovery for family members who lose a loved one. This change in the law would allow families to seek compensation for grief or anguish, loss of love, protection, comfort, and companionship and loss of nurture, guidance, counsel, advice, training and education resulting from death. Pam also takes pride in her commitment to the L.G.B.T.Q.I.A.+ community in the Capital Region through her legal representation of clients in the community and through the firm’s participation in local events that support and celebrate diversity. Tragedy inspired a national movement and began Pam’s journey as an advocate of EndDD in upstate New York. Today, under her leadership, O’Connell and Aronowitz volunteer attorneys have brought EndDD’s message to more than 14,000 students in upstate NY. Pam has also presented to the NYS Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and NYS Partnership for Teen Driving Safety. Every year, Pam leads our firm in volunteer efforts to help others in need.
